Herd Health
At Chapelton we continue to strive to produce cattle of high quality, high performance and superior health. We are members of the SAC’s Premium Cattle Health Scheme and plan to achieve accredited status for BVD, Johne ’s Disease and IBR.The Premium Cattle Health Scheme (PCHS) is organised and supervised by Veterinary Services of the Scottish Agricultural College in partnership with practising veterinary surgeons.
Cattle entered for the Perth and Carlisle sales are routinely tested for BVD, Leptospirosis, IBR and Johne’s prior to leaving the farm. For our customers protection and convenience sale cattle are vaccinated for BVD and Leptospirosis.
Johne’s Disease - Qualifying herd (first clear test 2008). Clear herd test 2009.
Every adult in both the Angus and Beef Shorthorn herds is tested annually for Johne’s.
BVD - Accredited
All breeding females in the Chapelton herds are BVD vaccinated. Each year we test the calf crop to check for antibody and virus. Each sale animal is vaccinated for the protection and confidence of our customers. BVD accreditation was achieved in 2008.
IBR
The last of our older “IBR antibody positive cows” (all believed to have be vaccinated as calves) have left the herd . A screen test of the herd with no positive results has given us confidence to proceed soon to accredited status. All sale animals are tested for IBR and results declared.
TB
The Chapelton herds are in a four yearly testing frequency area for TB. Our most recent test was carried out in January 2007. This test was successfully completed with no TB recorded.
